Logo Rationale
The Breadfruit Leaf is expressed in the eLearn2009 logo as a visual metaphor for education, while also capturing some of the history of The University of the West Indies which has its beginnings in agronomy. The breadfruit tree, a consistent supplier of food can be likened to the vast and widespread technology available in the information age, a key component of education. The breadfruit tree was brought to the Caribbean from the Pacific and it continues to evolve within our Caribbean diet.
As learners in the Caribbean we understand that we garner knowledge from far and wide, yet we are still acutely aware of our own context. The root system of the breadfruit is capable of extending beyond one place, crossing the boundaries of fences and environments. Similarly, technology with its new methods of communicating and networking provides a conduit for a free flow of information, and so we are no longer constrained by territorial boundaries. The transcending roots yield access to extensive knowledge and give rise to the development of our people.
